Preferential Option for the Poor and Vulnerable

July 2025

Core Principle

The Catholic Church teaches that a basic moral test of society is how it treats its most vulnerable members. This principle calls us to put the needs of the poor and marginalized first in our personal lives and public policies. Rooted in the Gospel and affirmed by the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2448), this teaching reflects Christ’s own concern for the poor and his call to serve “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40).

The Preferential Option for the Poor is not about exclusion, but about prioritization—ensuring that those who are most in need are not forgotten. It challenges us to examine the structures of society and to work for justice, equity, and compassion. In this Jubilee Year 2025, we are reminded that true Christian discipleship involves solidarity with the poor and a commitment to their upliftment.

Scriptural Reflection

He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free.

Luke 4:18

Prayer & Petitions

God of Compassion and Justice,

Hear and answer our prayers as we lift up the needs of our Church, our community, and all who suffer:

  • Bless Bishop Mark Eckman as he begins his ministry in Pittsburgh. May he lead with wisdom, humility, and a heart for the poor.
  • Strengthen him to be a voice for the voiceless and a servant to all in need.
  • Watch over Bishop David Zubik in his retirement. May he find peace and joy in this new chapter of life, and may his legacy of service continue to inspire.
  • Stir our hearts to recognize the dignity of every person, especially those who are overlooked or oppressed.
  • Move us to action—so that we may not only serve the poor, but also challenge the systems that keep them in poverty.
  • Strengthen Catholic Relief Services and all ministries that work tirelessly to uplift the vulnerable.
  • Help us to live simply, so that others may simply live.
  • May our parishes become places of welcome, healing, and hope for all in need.
  • Grant us the courage to stand in solidarity with the poor, even when it is uncomfortable or costly.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
