Refugee Services

"For I was a stranger and you welcomed me." ~ Matthew 25:35

For more than 25 years, Catholic Charities' Refugee Services Program has helped refugees resettle in the Pittsburgh area. The individuals and families who come here have been forced to leave their homeland and have suffered conditions of war and/or racial, political, or religious persecution. All of the people Catholic Charities works to resettle have been declared refugees by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and have come to the United States seeking a new home and a new start. Refugees relocated in the Pittsburgh area have come from Southeast Asia, Cuba, Africa, Haiti, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union.

Refugee Services provides refugees basic needs, English language training, and employment counseling. Refugee Employment Services staff work with local businesses to match refugees with jobs. More than ninety percent of the refugees we serve find employment within three months of their arrival. The Employment Services staff is always looking for more employer contacts so if your business would consider employing a refugee, call 412.456.6977.

Opportunities also exist for parish, church, or civic groups to partner with Refugee Services to help resettle new refugees. These partnerships make a positive difference in the lives of refugees who have been forced to leave their homes, jobs, possessions, families, friends, and countries. Several options for partnership exist. Information about this program is available by contacting the Refugee Services Program at 412.456.6977.
